Last weekend we were invited to the premiere of The Story at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. The film was great (we'll be adding a blog post this week with more details). After the screening, we headed next door to an afterparty at The Highlands where we got to meet the stars of the skiing world. All in all we had a spectacular evening.
It was refreshing to spend some time in the lights and bustle of the city. When music-making time came rolling around we were energized and ready to dive in. "Freeze Time" is the fruit of our labor.

daddy was a locksmith. mother ran a tight ship. she ended up driving him nuts.
he broke out and ran for it. I stayed. she was touched.
I learned a lot from her.
how to behave.
how to believe.
how to treat a human being.
it was her example. her preamble. his absence at the dinner table.
the inherited self control. the unlocked doors at night.
do you recognize this shape? this angle? your fatal mistake?
"Freeze Time"
by The Theory of Funkativity
Verse:
Every time I looked at you
I nearly lost my mind
Standing there across the room
Showing off your smile
You showed me a good time
I couldn't help but come to you
I was drawn to the light
I couldn't help but make a move
I had to make you mine
You gave me life
Chorus:
You were the best I've ever had
The only one to make me laugh
Darling, I am oh so sad
Now that we are done
You weren't the first
You won't be the last
But you were my favorite one
The one I really loved
We had so much fun
Verse:
I've given it a lot of thought
And this set you apart:
You really had the perfect form
You were like a work of art
You had me from start
I see you when I close my eyes
You're running in the dark
I didn't let you go but still you
Ran off with my heart
You made your mark
Chorus:
You were the best I've ever had
The only one to make me laugh
Darling, I am oh so sad
Now that we are done
You weren't the first
You won't be the last
But you were my favorite one
The one I really loved
We had so much fun
Chorus:
You weren't the first
You won't be the last
But you were my favorite one
The one I really loved
We had so much fun
You weren't the first
You won't be the last
But you were my favorite one
The one I really loved
You were my favorite one
We had so much fun
Didn't we, dear

On many levels, "Freeze Time" is not what it seems. I'm trying more and more to stay out of the way of the music as it comes together. The new songs are taking on a life of their own.

This is the second week in a row in which I've used Mellotron samples (
for those of you who don't know). I have a few different libraries at my disposal that range from crisp, direct-recorded samples to grainy vintage miked ones. So far I've favored the grainiest of the grainy. Our music has a clean, punchy feel, and I love the way that specific Mellotron tone sits in our mixes. Some of the recordings are so raw. The volume is uneven, you can hear the click of the keys, the motion of the tape... all of the glorious imperfections. It's a sound that is very much aligned with my thematic goal for the new songs.
